Kojak: Starring Vin Diesel

Announced to star Vin Diesel as the title character last year, Universal Picture's Kojak looks like it may have found a helmer in Life of Pidirector Ang Lee.
"Kojak… New York… Ang Lee…" Diesel posted to his Facebook wall moments ago in response to a fan's question about what director he'd like to work with in the future.
Although it's entirely possible that Diesel is merely pointing out his top choice, to specifically name Kojak as the project coupled with the fact that the film has not yet announced a director suggests that Diesel's dream is about to come true.
Screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Skyfall) are providing the screenplay to the television series adaptation. The original show, which ran on CBS from 1973 to 1978, starred Telly Savalas as NYPD Detective Lieutenant Theo Kojak, known for his penchant for lollipops and his catchphrase, "Who loves ya baby?"
Kojak has never before been brought to the big screen but a short-lived series reboot was attempted in 2005 with Ving Rhames in the Kojak role.
Diesel is also set to produce the feature version alongside Samantha Vincent.

Police Injustice

A suburban Detroit police officer admitted he asked a mentally ill black man to sing and dance and video recorded the incident.

Videos and and photos with degrading portrayals of black men were submitted earlier this month to the blog, Motor City Muckraker, purportedly from officers who disseminated them to friends and colleagues in the upper class, majority-white Michigan suburb of Grosse Pointe Park. One video portrayed a voice alleged to be an officer asking black men to do humiliating tasks, including “dance like a chimp.” In another incident, an officer allegedly texted a photo of a black man in the back of his trailer with the text, “Gotta love the coloreds.” The journalist, Steve Neavling, told the Huffington Post that he has more than a dozen videos shot by officers, but has not shared most of them because of their “humiliating nature.”

The unnamed officer has been taken off duty and is expected to face discipline, according to Neavling. But it is not clear whether that officer was the only one responsible for the photos and videos.

The incident is one of the most overt manifestations of recent minority mistreatment by law enforcement, particularly young black men. This week, an exposé in Florida revealed an aggressive police program in minority-dominated Miami Gardens is stopping the same individuals hundreds of times on disingenuous allegations of trespassing and other minor offenses. And on Friday, a federal appeals court declined to reverse a federal judge’s ruling that the New York Police Department engaged in unconstitutional racial profiling in its stop-and-frisk program.

Son dies as Mother refuses Medical attention

Criminal charges are pending against a Calgary mother who police allege relied on holistic treatments instead of getting medical help for her seven-year-old son's strep infection.

On the morning of March 2, emergency crews were called to a 17th Avenue S.W. basement suite where a young boy was having a seizure. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy found the cause of death was a strep infection, which would have been treatable with penicillin.

Police allege the mother did not take the boy for treatment, giving him holistic remedies instead.

"The treatment rendered at home was homeopathic in nature. This would include herbal remedies. The mother refused to take the child to a medical professional. No excuse given — just her belief system," said Staff Sgt. Mark Cavilla.

The boy was bedridden for 10 days prior to his death, police allege.

Charges are pending against his 44-year-old mother.

Those charges include criminal negligence causing death and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

IRAN: Nuclear Deal Reached

GENEVA — Iran and six major powers agreed early Sunday on a historic deal that freezes key parts of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for temporary relief on some economic sanctions.
The agreement, sealed at a 3 a.m. signing ceremony in Geneva’s Palace of Nations, requires Iran to halt or scale back parts of its nuclear infrastructure, the first such pause in more than a decade.

Standing up for Immigration

Illegal immigrants blockaded a federal office that handles deportations in Atlanta on Tuesday morning, and later in the day others in Chicago chained themselves to the wheels of a bus they said was headed to the airport on a deportation run.

The moves were designed to call attention to President Obama’s deportation policies, which the immigrant-rights activists say have gone too far. They want the president to use executive authority to stop almost all deportations.

NBA: Experts weigh in on Kobe's Extension

Tweet from Tom Haberstroh (@tomhaberstroh)
Amare Stoudemire will make $23.4 million in 2014-15. Joe Johnson will make $24.9 million in 2015-16. Kobe will top both.

@kevinarnovitz
In lieu of chasing title (which may not have been possible), Lakers opt for the most glorious and expensive farewell tour in NBA history.

6h
Stunned by Kobe's extension. Duncan + KG took less than 50% as much $ at same point in careers so their teams had more cap space to contend.

Heck, that would be a staggering commitment to make even if the Lakers knew that Bryant is sure to be fully healthy and 100 percent of the player he was before going down last year, because using about 37 percent of your salary-cap space (based on a projected 2014-15 cap line of $62.9 million) on a player who mitigates his prodigious offense with dangerous defense makes it incredibly difficult to field a true title-contending team. As it stands, the Lakers will now be paying Bryant, Steve Nash and Nick Young just over $34.4 million next year — add in cap holds to fill out the remainder of the roster, and L.A.'s available cap space this summer dips down to between $22.2 million and $28.5 million, according to salary cap wizard Larry c00n, depending on whether the Lakers decide to keep Nash around for the final year of his deal. (For his part, the injured point guard has said he does not plan to retire at the end of this season, and that he has every intention of coming back for the final year of the contract he signed in the summer of 2012.)

NBA: Kobe signs Extension w/ Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed Kobe Bryant to a two-year contract extension, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not released.

“This is a very happy day for Lakers fans and for the Lakers organization,” said Kupchak. “We’ve said all along that our priority and hope was to have Kobe finish his career as a Laker, and this should ensure that that happens. To play 20 years in the NBA, and to do so with the same team, is unprecedented, and quite an accomplishment. Most importantly however, it assures us that one of the best players in the world will remain a Laker, bringing us excellent play and excitement for years to come.”

Teen Wrongfully Arrested

Bronx resident Kalief Browder was walking home from a party when he was abruptly arrested by New York City police officers on May 14, 2010. A complete stranger said Browder had robbed him a few weeks earlier and, consequently, changed the 16-year-old's life forever.
Browder was imprisoned for three years before the charges were dropped in June 2013, according to a WABC-TV Eyewitness News investigation.
At the time of the teen's arrest, Browder's family was unable to pay the $10,000 bail. He was placed in the infamously violent Rikers Island correctional facility, where he remained until earlier this year.
Now that he's free, the young man is speaking up about his experience.
"I spent three New Year's in there, three birthdays...," Browder, now 20, said in a recent interview with WABC, adding that he was released with "no apology."
In October, Browder filed a civil lawsuit against the Bronx District Attorney, City of New York, the New York City Police Department, the New York City Department of Corrections and a number of state-employed individuals.
The official complaint states Browder was "physically assaulted and beaten" by officers and other inmates during his time at Rikers Island. The document also maintains the accused was "placed in solitary confinement for more than 400 days" and was "deprived meals." In addition, officers allegedly prevented him from pursuing his education. Browder attempted suicide at least six times.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Browder's current lawyer Paul Prestia summarized his client's experience as "inexplicable" and "unheard of." Based off one man's identification, Browder was charged with robbery in the second degree, he notes. It took three years to dismiss these charges, even though it was, in Prestia's words, a "straightforward case to try."
"The city needs to be held accountable for what happened," Prestia said. "[Browder] had a right to a fair and speedy trail, and he wasn't afforded any of that. He maintained his innocence the entire time, and essentially got a three year sentence for that."
Still, when Browder was offered a plea deal in January, he refused to take it, because he did not want to plead guilty to the crime, WABC-TV notes. (Had Browder been tried in a timely fashion and pled guilty to the crime, Prestia told HuffPost, he might have spent less time in prison.)
Prestia adds that his client has suffered lingering mental health problems, and though he's currently going to school for his GED, he's "clearly way behind from where he would have been."
"We need someone to be held accountable," Prestia said. "This can't just go unnoticed. To the extent that [Browder] can be financially compensated -- although it's not going to get those years back for him -- it may give him a chance to succeed."
The District Attorney's office said it was unable to comment, as Browder's allegations are currently the subject of ongoing litigation.
Incidentally, Browder's claims about his experience at Rikers Island are consistent with findings from a recent report commissioned by the New York City Board of Correction. The report, obtained by The Associated Press, notes that the use of force by prison staff has more than tripled from 2004 to 2013, from seven incidents of force per 100 inmates, to almost 25. Additionally, the number of self-mutilation and suicide attempts by Rikers inmates have increased by 75 percent from 2007 to 2012. According to the report, 40 percent of the city jail's 12,200 inmates are mentally ill, and many of these inmates are placed in solitary confinement "holes" as punishment.

Jay Z's Barneys' Collection

Jay Z's pricey collaboration with Barneys launched on Wednesday.
RELATED STORIES
This whole Barneys/Jay Z “shop-and-frisk” circus is becoming a parody of itself.
Here I am on Wednesday at lunchtime wandering the Jay Z collection on the third floor of Barneys up on Madison Ave., pricing a white T-shirt with leather epaulets — $995. Black jeans — $365. En Noir leather shorts — $2,590. An En Noir hoodie — $3,100. If the price doesn’t kill you, George Zimmerman might.
I’m wandering through this darkened room of the Jay Z collection with rap music blaring and a six-minute film projected on the walls of a subway roaring out of Brooklyn into Manhattan.
Which is comical because no sane New Yorker would wear any of this overpriced junk on the subway without an armed guard.
RELATED: LAUNCH OF JAY Z’S PRICEY BARNEYS COLLECTION A SNOREAnd he might rob you.
After four different workers ask if they can help me, I realize I’m the only potential customer in the room. At lunchtime. And I’m just writing down prices, including $695 for a black cashmere ski mask called The Elder Statesman. Which you can wear to the bank you’ll need to rob to afford to shop here. Smart fashion statement to make at night court.
I’m tempted to try on the Just Don black leather Brooklyn baseball hat with python trim for $875, but I come from old-school Brooklyn, like Jay Z, where a baseball hat in Modell’s went for like $20.
Art director Joanie Lemercier (left) and artist Boris Edelstein designed the Jay Z display, including three windows. Lemercier says he doesn't understand why the media 'made such a big deal' about two racial profiling allegations.

Art director Joanie Lemercier (left) and artist Boris Edelstein designed the Jay Z display, including three windows. Lemercier says he doesn't understand why the media 'made such a big deal' about two racial profiling allegations.
So I wander out onto the street following two white guys who pass a lone black protester who berates Barneys shoppers. I ask the white guys if they’d heard about racial profiling at Barneys.

This is my associate, Boris Edelstein, the artist. We designed these three Barneys windows, too. I cannot understand why the press makes such a big deal out of two incidents. In Europe this wouldn’t happen.”
He says he conceived the show with Jay Z. “Barneys hired us and put us together with Jay Z,” he says. “We collaborated with Jay Z on the theme and look of the show.”
What’s the theme and look?
“It’s about black and white,” he says.

Worldwide Debut: Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo

For those that aren’t familiar with your work, could you please introduce yourself?
My name is Kazunori Yamauchi and I’ve been the producer for the driving simulation game Gran Turismo for the past 20 or so years.
How have the last 20 years been for you?Since each of the titles, from GT1 to the current one we are working on, GT6, it’s pretty much been no rest. I don’t even think I’ve had an actual weekend for the past 20 years haha.
I heard that this is your first time seeing the actual physical version of the AMG Vision Gran Turismo. What are your thoughts on it?I’ve seen the CG version of this car over and over again, but seeing it today, I’m really amazed at the quality of it. It’s above what I expected, and that’s already with a pretty high set bar.
It was mentioned that well before you even knew what the car would look like, you needed specs and technical data on the Vision in order to start the game developing on it. How did Mercedes facilitate your request, and how did you get them involved with the project?Well, I initially reached out to a few manufacturers asking if they would make a Gran Turismo forGran Turismo. A few got back to be saying that they would love to. What impressed me about Benz was that when I arrived at their design facility in Stuttgart, they literally had hundreds of designs of this car on this wall. They had their teams from all over the world to submit their designs for my request. They were really keen on this project and had so many people involved up until just one was selected.
I mean, this is the final design, but we are still working on the finishing touches at our studios. They made it that good.
There’s no denying the cult-like following of the Gran Turismo series. Could you tell us more about how things are going with the franchise, especially with the move to the next generation of consoles? With such attention-to-detail on the driving experience for each of the games, will things become more challenging as the demands increase?I think moving from PS3 to PS4 actually makes development easier. The PS3 was a special type of hardware that required tweaking, but the PS4 is more plain and straightforward. Better graphics just bring and make the experience that much more closer to the real thing.
Any last words regarding this experience and with GT6 coming soon?I mean, either way, I am happy to see a beautiful car like this come out to the world today. It reminds us that cars are a beautiful thing.
The Internet was set ablaze recently when Mercedes-Benz introduced its latest supercar, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo a few days ago. Coinciding with the official grand opening of its new West Coast Sunnyvale, California research and design facility, Mercedes-Benz hosted a special press engagement to officially unveil the concept car model on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Designed specifically for Gran Turismo 6, the car is a concept vehicle that is not planned for production, but rather will be limited strictly to in-game play. Taking place on the rooftop terrace of the newly minted facility, the 1:1 scale, full size model was on display highlighting all of the premium design elements such as the LED lighted front grill and carbon fiber components.
. The evening was actually the first time that Yamauchi had seen the completed 1:1 scale model in person. In between taking shots of the car with his own camera for his personal collection, Yamauchi took the time to converse with our editors about his storied history with theGran Turismo franchise as well as the future of the game and the next generation of video gaming.

Jay-Z Teaming with Barneys

In the past several weeks two separate investigations were launched as a result of the wrongful detention of Trayon Christian and Kayla Phillips. My team has been privy to the status of the Barneys third party consultant investigation. In continuing our research, we also contacted the New York State Attorney General’s office for the status of their investigation into both Barneys and Macy’s. Those findings are not yet available.
While I await the findings of the Attorney General’s Office, I have agreed to move forward with the launch of BNY SCC collection under the condition that I have a leadership role and seat on a council specifically convened to deal with the issue of racial profiling. I am in a unique position to use my voice to affect change to this disturbing issue. The easy position would have been to walk away and leave policy making to others hoping that someone addresses the problem. I will not leave the outcome to others. I will take this into my own hands with full power to recommend, review and revise policies and guidelines moving forward. I am choosing to take this head on.
As I previously stated, the collaboration with Barneys has always been about giving and The Shawn Carter Foundation. From this collection, the Foundation will receive not only 25% of sales, it will now receive the additional 75% of Barneys’ sales, totalling 100% of all sales from BNY SCC. Along with 100% of sales from the collaboration, the Foundation will receive an additional 10% of all retail sales from Barneys New York stores nationwide and Barneys.com on November 20th.

Could LeBron score 70?

James scored 39 points on only 18 shots, Wade's night included a career-best eight steals, and the Heat held off the Dallas Mavericks 110-104 Friday night.
"You give me 37 shots in a game, I'll have 60, 70," James said. "I had 40 tonight on 18 shots. If I get 37 shots in a game, I'm going to put up 60. Easy."
Thing is, the odds of seeing James shoot 37 times in a game -- like Rudy Gay did earlier this week in setting the NBA high so far this season -- are quite slim. His career-high is 36. He's only taken 30 or more shots twice since joining the Heat; both of those came in regular-season losses."He understands the main thing being the main thing," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He wants to win more than anything."

James had never scored more than 38 when taking 18 or fewer shots, and missed just four times on Friday.

200 Reasons why you should have a SmartPhone

When Google bought Motorola there were plenty of theories about why it wanted the mobile maker. Patents, being named chief among them. But today’s launch of the low-cost Moto G smartphone suggests the strategy was — or has certainly become — multi-faceted.
If there’s any kind of wall between Google and Motorola it’s definitely a porous one. Motorola’s Punit Soni took the stage in São Paulo to discuss what the Google-owned mobile maker was trying to achieve on the software front with the Moto G. Soni went to Motorola from Google last year, where he’s now VP of product management.
His on-stage session cheerleading the Moto G at turns resembled a strident lecture — which in turn sounded very much like Google chiding and schooling its Android OEMs on what it takes to make decent budget handsets. Subtext: stop making awful Android phones and using ‘budget price-point’ as your excuse.
“I came from [Google to Motorola],” said Soni, during the Moto G launch. “I can vouch for the fact that Android is the best mobile operating system in the world bar none. It is progressive, intuitive, it’s gorgeous and it’s very high performance. Not only that it updates itself at regular intervals; it only gets better. A device that’s built on pure Android with minor optimisations is going to have an incredibly high performance. That is the crux of our software strategy.”
Android’s low end has clearly become an embarrassment to Google, dragging the platform’s reputation down by pairing it with cheap, underpowered hardware — which inevitably results in a laggy, frustrating user experience.
Even though the huge reach of Android — which runs the gamut from high end flagships to ‘cheap as chips’ mobiles — is a strength when it comes to talking about marketshare; Google monetises the platform via its own software services. So if those services are absent because an Android OEM made too many changes to the platform, or rendered it frustratingly laggy because of bad hardware/bloated software, then it’s Google’s business that suffers.
Seen in that context, the Moto G looks very much like Google’s answer to cleaning up Android’s low end.
Soni described the current crop of Android OEMs as having a “confused” relationship with Android — because in trying to differentiate their handsets, they’re either slowing Android down with skins or duplicating Google’s own services and cluttering the user experience.
“In today’s ecosystem, mobile manufacturers have a very confused relationship with Android. They build on top of it but then they add on all these custom skins which detract from the user experience and hog resources,” he said. “Then they go and put duplicated software on top of it which basically competes with Google’s mobile services and you have a situation where you have homescreens with multiple mail apps, multiple app stores, multiple video players and music players and so on.”
“The result of all of this is you have devices with very non-intuitive, cluttered user interfaces, with apps that actually slow it down and make it worse than they need to be — the phone much slower than it needs to be. Now there has to be a better way to do this,” he added.
Soni said Motorola had focused on “complementing” rather than “competing” with Android — and singled out aspects such as the display, the battery life and the camera as areas where OEMs should absolutely be sweating to produce a decent smartphone experience for a low-end price.
In other words, the Moto G is basically a lesson in what it takes to make a decent Android handset for sub-$200.
TechCrunch asked Motorola Canada’s General Manager, Odile Guinot, whether or not the Moto G was a proverbial gauntlet thrown in the direction of other Android OEMs.
“We feel it’s an unserved part of the market,” she said. “It’s not like we’re the only person that can do it, it’s just that we’re the only company that wants to right now, and the only one that is doing it.”
To make this device, Google surveyed 15,000 smartphone users and focused on their priorities, among which was customization, according to Guinot. It was higher on their list than other features some might have expected to place high, including LTE support.
“That’s just not what the customers were looking for,” Guinot said of LTE. “They did not prioritize that when they talked about an affordable phone. They wanted to have a big display where they could watch their videos and view their pictures, etc. They wanted to have the latest Android.”
Do less with Android, and your devices stand a better chance of being updated to the latest version of Android, was another point made by Soni — referencing (in so many words) Android’s ongoing fragmentation problem. More evidence, if it were needed, that Motorola is acting as the mouthpiece of Google — telling Android OEMs what to do and what not do. And then hammering that lesson home by unboxing a $179 “premium” smartphone that has to potential to cut a swathe through the low-end Android pack, decimating the businesses of sub-par OEMs.
With the Moto G, Motorola is making the rare claim that devices will receive a guaranteed update to Android 4.4. Guinot told TechCrunch that carrier partners are on board with getting the update out on time, and that in fact, it’s in their best interest to do so, so they were happy to help. Google has worked with them to make sure all testing required is completed on time, she added.
“A pure Android strategy allows us to shine a light on Google services,” added Soni, continuing to sing from the Google hymn sheet. “Google has some of the best software services in the world. Whether it’s Gmail, Hangouts, YouTube, you name it; the list goes on.”
As well as taking out Android’s low-end trash, it’s possible Google also has Samsung in its sights with the Moto G. If the handset lives up to the promise of a premium experience for sub-$200 it could give consumers pause for thought about picking up another budget Samsung device that’s been compromised by a cramped, low-res screen and puny processor. Samsung’s flagships are excellent phones but the company plays at all price-points and makes more than its fair share of sub-par ‘Droids.
Motorola name-checked two Samsung devices during the Moto G presentation — the Galaxy Fame and the Galaxy S4 — the only Android OEM singled out in this way for explicit criticism, unless you count the passing reference to HTC’s Sense UI. (The other non-Android device mentioned was the iPhone 4/4S — and eating into Apple’s ‘past years’ discounted iPhones’ lunch is evidently also on Moto/Google’s mind.)
When it comes to Samsung, the Korean mobile maker’s dominance of the Android ecosystem has certainly made life tough for other Android OEMs. Motorola’s own position in handsets was looking shaky at the point when Google stepped in to buy it/save it. And today HTC continues to struggle to keep its handset business out of the drink. Bearing that in mind, doing what it can to dilute Samsung’s Android marketshare may also be on Google’s mind — as it puts Moto to work outshining the low-end competition.
That said, the Moto G may well make life harder for HTC which is apparently gearing up to shift its focus to more affordable smartphones. At $179 for a quad-core 4.5-inch device, Google-owned Motorola looks set to squeeze handset hardware profits ‘til the pips squeak. The profits it is making off of these phones might actually be in the accessories: those are traditionally high-margin, and Google has made sure to make this the most moddable phone possible, with a huge line of in-house cases, a Bluetooth headset called Buds and lots more in terms of launch accessories.
But, at the end of the day, growth in smartphones is coming from the low-end segment — as emerging markets switch from basic feature phones to smartphones. Which was a point Soni reiterated several times. And with Moto G, Google is putting Android in a plum position to “on ramp” those newcomers, and steer them away from alternatives that are offering a better experience at the low end than sub-par Androids. Notably Microsoft’s Windows Phone has been gathering some momentum in markets such as South America with its budget handsets — like the Nokia Lumia 520. They may not have access to a million apps, but the basic experience is solid — and you can’t say the same for every budget ‘Droid.
Motorola didn’t say what the ‘G’ in Moto G stands for — and it could well refer to several things. ‘G for Growth’, say, or ‘G for Global’ — with the phone set to go on sale in more than 30 countries, with 60 partners by 2014. Europe, Asia, South America and North America are all set to get their hands on this handset, with both the U.S. and Canada included in the rollout.
But really who are we kidding? This phone has been branded ‘G for Google’.

64-bit in the New Iphone

SINCE its resurgence in the late 1990s, Apple has generally shied away from trumpeting processor speeds, cache sizes or other technical details in its marketing materials, preferring to emphasise what its products can do, rather than what is inside them. It does make exceptions, however, as in the case of the recent launch of the iPhone 5s, its new flagship smartphone. Executives hyped its "64-bit" A7 processor, which they asserted haddesktop-computer performance and could complete some tasks twice as quickly as the 32-bit chip in its previous model. Rivals, bloggers and technology-news sites disparaged its claims, saying that there was no good reason to put a 64-bit chip in a smartphone except to claim bragging rights. Anand Chandrasekher, the chief marketing officer of Qualcomm, a rival technology firm, told Techworld: "Predominantly...you need it for memory addressability beyond 4GB [gigabytes]. That's it. You don't really need it for performance." Yet the performance boost is there, as independent benchmark testing confirms. Why has Apple made the jump to 64 bits?
A central processing unit (CPU) is the number-crunching brain of any digital device, whether it's a laptop, phone or Mars rover. A CPU is capable of performing various basic mathematical and logical operations: divide this number by that number, say, or compare two values and jump to a different point in the program depending on the result. As Steve Jobs once observed, all computers do is fetch and shuffle numbers, but do it fast enough and “the results appear to be magic”. One difference between a 32-bit chip and a 64-bit chip is that the latter can fetch or shuffle twice as many bits with each tick of the processor's clock, thus performing computationally intensive tasks more quickly. Another difference, as Mr Chandrasekher correctly noted, is that a 64-bit chip can more easily support larger amounts of random-access memory (RAM). No single program running on a 32-bit processor can, without a lot of fussing, use more than 4GB of memory, which can be a problem when managing large data sets or handling extremely complex graphics. Such programs tend not to be used on smartphones or tablets, but run instead on desktop, laptop and server computers, which made the jump to 64-bit chips some years ago.
But by putting a 64-bit chip into its latest smartphone (and its new iPads), Apple is recognising that they are increasingly being expected to perform heavyweight computing tasks for which people would previously have used "proper" computers. For many people, tablets have already replaced laptop computers for a wide range of tasks, and the proportion is only likely to grow. (Phones and tablets have become the most popular devices on which to play games, which are also computationally demanding.) The appearance of a 64-bit chip in a smartphone is, in short, yet another example of how phones and tablets are displacing PCs as the most popular and widely used computing devices.
For Apple, which has been the greatest proponent and beneficiary of this trend, being able to brag about the chip in its new iPhone is merely an added bonus. Other manufacturers are sure to follow suit with 64-bit mobile devices. Within the next couple of years, more tablets and smartphones will want to cross the 4GB RAM barrier. Qualcomm, Samsung, Nvidia and others are all expected to release 64-bit mobile processors of their own, in many cases based on the same architecture that Apple has licensed from ARM, a British chip-design firm. Samsung is aiming for 2014, and Qualcomm, which acts as a supplier to handset-makers, will soon be trying to convince them to buy 64-bit chips. Little wonder, then, that Qualcomm's press relations team quickly repudiated Mr Chandrasekher's claim that beyond being able to support more RAM, there was "zero benefit" to 64-bit chips. There is—which is why Apple has adopted them.
